The invasion of Iran's western borders by the Iraqi Ba'athist army during the early years of the Sacred Defense (the Iran-Iraq War, 1980-1988) was met with diverse forms of popular resistance. Among these, analyzing the role of indigenous forces within the framework of irregular warfare is of particular importance. Aimed at elucidating this subject, the present study addresses the primary question of how the Kalhor Tribe, by relying on its inherent social structure and geographic knowledge, established effective indigenous resistance mechanisms against the conventional Iraqi army. This research employs a descriptive-analytical methodology based on documentary and library data. The findings indicate that the principal resistance mechanism of the Kalhor Tribe was founded on three pillars: 1) the rapid mobilization of forces through its network of charismatic leadership and the influence of tribal elders; 2) the intelligent application of irregular warfare tactics, particularly in the epic defense of Gilan-e-Gharb (involving urban warfare and the strategic use of terrain features); and 3) an organizational evolution from spontaneous cells into the cohesive "GOMJAN-e-Ashayer" (Tribal Mobilization) structure. The study's results reveal that this indigenous resistance not only played a decisive role in halting the enemy's advance and buying strategic time for the organization of conventional forces but also strengthened the bond between ethnic and national identities. Consequently, it stands as a prominent model for leveraging indigenous capacities in national defense, thereby consolidating national cohesion.
